Canon 70-300 F4/5.6 L lens - thoughts????

Already have a 70-200 and a 300 which i will keep and use, often with my job i am after a bit more length and a compact option. Have any of you got this lens? how do you find it? is it sharp?

Any help/thoughts
 
I haven't got any personal experience but Philthejuggler had one and was very impressed....he's had a good selection of top end glass to compare it to.

I have one! ... some people are put off when they read its f4-5.6 but the image quality is right up there with the 70-200 2.8II and its sharp from 70-300!!!
bought it instead of the 70-200 2.8II (ive used both)as i felt that my 5D3 with high ISO would make up the shortfall (and being a FF might need the extra 100mm)
much better to carry around than the 70-200 as its lighter and more compact for traveling especially.

cant recommend it enough! .. took it to the USA last year and it rarely left my 5D3

maybe a few more people will come on and give their opinions as i'm just a hobbyist' and can only compare it to 4 or 5 other "L" lenses that i've owned/rented
 
I've read quite a few posts on here with people who have one and are very pleased with it - some trading in the 100-400 for it

It's certainly one I'd be looking at ...
 
Tried the 70-200f2.8ii and f4, bought the 70-300L probably 3-4 years ago and love it. It issharp wide open which gives enough separation and lovely bokeh, it is reasonably light so a day at a zoo is a pleasure not pain. 300mm is also obviously longer than 200mm. The IS is unbelievable I don't even worry about shooting say 1/60 @ 300mm hand held. I have used in heavy rain and it did not leak.( I was worried a bit)

I did have a 100-400mm but it was too heavy and I found I could crop the 70-300 images and get a better result so sold it after a couple of weeks.

Just a great bit of glass and a real bargain IMO
 
Pin sharp throughout the zoom range and across the frame from centre to corner. Superb IS. Fast AF. Well built. Relatively compact when at 70mm with a lock facility to prevent zoom creep. Recommended.
 
The 70-300L is a lovely lens. Think of it as a more compact, lighter and longer ranged version of 70-200 f/2.8 II, albeit without the constant wider aperture. IQ is about as good as it gets, and the IS is equal to any lens ever made.
