Canon 70-300 rattle sound

Hi everyone,

I have a Canon 70-300 lens with Image stabiliser.

I have not used it for a while, when I tired today as you try to focus, the whole lens rattles!
You can see it through the view finder, but then it will be ok for a while.

I tried to turn off the IS, then it rattled without even touching the shutter?
But then just stopped?

Has anyone any ideas what it is please?

It is like a shuddering if that makes sense, and helps with any advice...
