Today I realised that my onboard flash wasn't working. I very rarely use it so I am not sure how long it has been broken for.

It wont pop up normally in the auto mode, and pressing the flash button in any mode doesn't work.

I went into the menu and under the Flash options the message given is that a device is already using the hotshoe. Obviously there is nothing on.

Has anybody got any ideas what I can do to resolve this.

Hi Stephen, I had the exact same problem, I sent it in and it was a case of some sticky substance :gag: ( dont ask ) :D was holding it down. I think it was when I choked and spat some Coffee out one evening and a small amount sprayed over the camera. I remember cleaning the top of the camera off but did not think about any that might have crept inside the hinge mechanism for the flash.
 
I've read about this before, there is a small metal part in the hot shoe that sometimes gets stuck down. You should be able to free it with a sharp object if you are careful, just make sure the camera is off before you try and be gentle.

'Tis highly likely the tiny black pin on the right side of the hot shoe (looking from the rear of the camera) has stuck down. Free that and you free your soul. (Well the flash anyway :cool:)
 
I could be wrong but I think there is a pin either side of the hotshoe plates as far as I am aware. Slipped my mind that I read about that as a possible cause as well. I would advise not to go poking around too much though, the pressure sensitive pins have a thin rubber shroud over them, you break that and you then leave yourself open for water to get inside.
 
Thanks for your help. It is now working again. I think it was the left pin that springs up in the hotshoe grip hadn't sprung up. if that makes sense!

I rarely use the onboard but there was as much as panic as if the shutter release was broken! haha.
