Ive searched and searched and read review after review!

I guess the extra reach outside would help - it would be tight indoors though - but then i have a 50 1.4 so could always move closer i guess :S

If it were YOU what would you buy.

Yes we have different needs but just gauging an opinion ..
 
well im replacing zooms with primes ... so the 85 isnt that far from the 50 .. perhaps i should go 100 and stand further back or further forward with the 50 lol?

so based on the fact that its 80, 121 and 160 do you think the jump between 80 and 160 is too much and i need that one in the middle?
 
As said earlier it's horses for couses, for portrait work I would go for the 50mm and 85mm especialy if indoor studio type setup but if you want to use for other things well then maybe the 50mm 100mm combo would be better. In an ideal world all three and somebody to carry all the kit. :D

I found a vs review of the two. It said the 85mm is sharper wide open but has more CAs.

I reckon on a crop definitely get the 85mm. I have just bought an 85mm but I wonder if might be a bit short for me on full frame.

Just got it and I think it's perfect on full frame, sorry about that! :)

Actually had a chance to try it on my friend's 40D as well and while it's still really nice it's perhaps a little too telephoto for using indoor etc.
 
I have put off the 85mm as i have the 100mm macro lens which workss quite well as a portrait lens. I have the 135mm and on FF its fine but waaaay to long on crop for me! The 50mm for me on crop is ideal and matches up to about 80mm on FF

If you have the 50mm i would go the 85mm its a fantastic lens IMO and well worth the money. I have owned one used it loads but had to sell as was a bit strapped for cash. I would buy one in a heart beat if i had the spare cash.
