Not a bit of it!!
I had an old 18-55 consumer zoom in my spares box, there simply because I had dropped it in a puddle many years ago. I decided to take it to pieces today, for two reasons, one, I needed a lens element for an 'experiment', and two, for badness, I wanted to see how easy it is to break one.
Answer? Not at all easy. After removing the trim from the front of the lens, I had to remove 4 screws. 3 came out easily, and the 4th wouldn't budge. I tried everything to remove the screw, including a drift and a hammer. It still wouldn't move, so I tried to wrench it off. The damned plastic didn't want to break, but it did - eventually give up the fight. I removed the front element.
I then decided to mount the lens, and believe it or not, after several years rusting away, and a bout of wrenching and hammering, the AF motor whirred away, and the lens started hunting for focus. I couldn't believe it. After another half an hour or so of ham fisted wrenching and twisting, I had the thing in pieces, but believe me, it was hard work, and it resisted all the way.
They may feel flimsy, lightweight and cheap, but the damned things are well built, and built to last!!
