I have had a reply from Canon Service in Germany and since spoken to Colchester Camera Repairs and servicing and parts are still available for this lens.
Apparently Colchester Camera Repairs thought itwas the 70-210 that was being asked about (or so they say?).
The service/repair from Canon themselves costs £125 and includes any required parts which is less than that quoted from Colchester Camera Repairs in Ian's for sale thread here
Hopefully this will clear up any confusion over the availability of spares for a lens which is still part of the Canon current lineup!
