Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 for infant/babies photography

Hi All

I am interested in taking close portraits of infants and babies. An example is below -

Does Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 lens would be ok for these kind of pictures ? I have a EOS 1000D camera. My budget is tight so cannot afford lens above INR 10,000/ $ 200.

I will also use few props for creativity. Appreciate your response.

P.S - I do not own the above picture. It has been taken from Internet just for reference.

I already have 50 1.8 could not get right results.
 
I would go for a 100mm focal length then, have recently done some similar stuff and used an 85. I say 100 because you can get some cheap 3rd party 100mm macro focal lengths which should suit you well.

You should be able to, I've used a fast 50 for baby portraiture before to good effect.

The shot you've posted you could achieve with pretty much any lens? What is it you're trying to achieve?
 
I'm guessing the limitation is space? Do you have a kit lens? If so find a focal length which works and try that. Not sure if buying another lens will help you in this situation. Do you have lighting etc setup correctly? How are you lighting the child?

@StewartR I need to work on my position w.r.t to the baby's.

@odd jim My intention is nothing but taking good portraits of infants/sleeping babies with props.

@minnnt As, I am not a professional photographer so I manage lighting with couple of soft LEDs and a reflector. This setup worked perfect for photo shoot of my daughter.
 
Yes @minnnt . Focal length is issue. In other words, if I go near the child, cannot capture the whole body. If I increase the distance, the subject appears small in photo.

Forgive me for explaining my requirement in basic terms. Still an amateur & ramping up.
 
No problem, we're all here to help you.

The problem you have just described won't be helped by a new lens though. The 50mm will be fine if you have the space. Just work on your framing and composition. Watch some YouTube video's to help you master it.
 
@minnnt Let me shoot another query towards you. I am going to replicate below photo next week. I tried few pics & found that 50mm was enough for it. Would like to know your opinion on this -

Yep, works well. As i said, concentrate on your composition and try and ensure the picture is level to avoid unnecessary cropping afterwards. You'll need to use a wide aperture so something around f1.8-2.8 to achieve the OOF background.

Why don't you move closer if moving out makes the subject too small?

So why not choose a medium distance where you can capture the whole subject but it does not appear small?
