Canon EOS 7D Lens Choice

Afternoon,

It’s been a while since I last had a DSLR, which was an EOS 40D which I sold to a member on here. :D

After doing a lot of research on DSLR's I am looking to buy a 7D on Friday, as I believe this going to suit my requirements better.

Now the main reason for the post, I have been looking at a number of lenses and I am still none the wiser. The 2 lens I have in mind are 24mm-70mm and the 24mm-105mm. The main goal it’s a general purpose lens. So I am looking for opinions on both, also I am open for suggestions on other lens options.

Both are some of the best general purpose canon lenses
I used to use the 24-105 on a crop body and got on with it fine

have you considered the 17-55 f/2.8?
 
Are you happy with 24mm at the wide end? If so, either will do nicely.

The generally recommended walkabouts for a 7D are:

Canon 17-55 f2.8 (expensive)
Canon 15-85 f3.5-f5.6 (cheaper, good range, a bit slow)
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 NON VC (relatively cheap and sharp)
 
ah - forgot about the 15-85mm that is also an excellent lens
not fixed aperture like the 17-55 but still optically excellent


The L's are better still but it depends if you want to save yourself a bit of cash?

Not sure the 24-105 is better TBH. Depends what you value in a lens, but if you're OK post processing vignetting/distortion, the 15-85 is hard to beat for the price IMHO.

I really must do a back to back 15-85 vs 24-105 one day....
 
The L's arnt always better.

If you think you'll keep the 7d for a while, which it sounds as if you are, buy the Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8. There isn't an L lens better optically in this range better suited to the 7d.

Better priced too.

Take advantage of the fact you can use the excellent EFS lenses.

24mm should be ok, as I said I am going for a test / playaround on Friday with them.

I had a 17-85 Lens on my old 40D which I struggled to get a sharp image from.

Ideally, I would like something I could use in low light as well.

Yes, Id be keeping the 7d for a while.

I will have a look at the 17-55 lens on Friday, thanks for the help.

The 15-85 is a different beast. The IS system is very, very good if you're shooting static objects. Not useful if you're shooting moving tho...

Not done any comparisons on the 7D (24-105 has only been on the 7D once). If had to guess, I'd say I get more keepers/pleasing images from 15-85 on the 7D over the 24-105 on the 5D2.
 
After spending a good few hours in the shop today. I am now the proud owner of a Canon EOS 7D and a 24-70 F2.8, plus I got a few other bits and bobs.

The mean reason I when for the above is to keep the lens over lap to a minimum really plus the extra advantage of night use.

So for the wide angle I was thinking about the 10 20 lens. However, for now that can wait. The one thing I notices was the weight and build quality over the F4.
