Canon Eos 7D or 550D?

This is my first post so hey everyone :)
At the moment I have a Panasonic Lumix G1 and while its a great little camera I feel like I have already outgrown it and am looking for an upgrade. Its main use will be motorsport photography but I guess it will be used as an all purpose camera too.
I have narrowed it down to the Canon Eos 7D or the 550D. My main question is weather the 7D would be worth the extra, I dont want to buy another camera only to find that im wanting more shortly after. The 550D would leave me money to get some decent lenses for it but if the 7D is worth the extra then thats the one I would go for.
If anyone has any experience with any or both of the above then I would be extremely grateful or if anyone has any general advice for me it would be greatly apreaciated.

I started with a 400d and got a 30d and then a 50d and then a 5d. The usability and functionality of the 7d will be so much better. The thing that I prefer about anything higher than 100 series is the ability to quickly select af points and the response and the build quality. It's all about compromise tho. If the choice is a 7d with rubbish lens or 550d with good lens then you will probably get better shots with the 550.if you can get the 7d though and get some decent glass you won't ever regret it.
 
I have just gone through the same dilemma and after posting on here and asking lots of questions decided the &D was worth the extra, am in the process of purchasing as we speak

The 7D would make more sense if you are interested in sport of any kind. If money is an issue you can pick up second hand versions with about 10k actuations for around £700-800 in excellent condition.

If you can afford the extra money ,then 7d is the one to go for.I had a canon 7d and it is a cracking camera.

Definitely go for the 7D. When I bought my 450D, I quickly replaced it for a 40D and have subsequently moved to a 5D II, it was a lot of money but well worth the upgrade.
 
I've been the proud owner of a 7D for 2 weeks now :lol:

It's a whole lot bigger and heavier than my old 400D (the 7D and the 15-85mm lens weigh about 1.4KG!!!) but the image quality is far superior and IMO, justifies the price tags of both body & lens.

The jump from the 400D to 550D wasn't that big, I was getting a few extras but nothing that significant (IMO) the 60D was the more realistic upgrade but considering the 7Ds bias towards keeping up with fast paced sports, wildlife etc, built in wireless flash triggers and being able to use my existing compact flash memory cards (as opposed to having to buy all new SD cards) the £300 or so price diffence wasn't actually that bad ;)
