Canon Extension tubes EFxx or EFxxII?

What's the difference then?

I want some extension tubes for a Canon 50D so...

Will they both work?
Is it dependent on lenses?
Mark II significantly better than Mark I?

Anyone care to give me some advice?

The MkII's will accept EF-S lenses, the MkI's won't.

Additional advice is to buy the Kenko tubes instead. Bear in mind that whilst Canon glass is IMO the best you can get for the system, that Canon fresh air really doesn't hold any advantages. As the tubes really are just cylinders with nothing inside, might aswell go with the MUCH cheaper option.

Sound advice there....or is it?

Can you confirm that the Kenko's are rated to hold 1kg in shear force?...they'd have to be to safely connect a gripped 50D to a tripod supported lens. The rating would need to be 1.35kg for a 1D3....worth the risk?

Like the Canon MkI's I don't think Kenko extension tubes are compatible with EF-S lenses
