Hi,

I'm in the marker for a smaller camera as a backup when I cant take the 5D.

Is there much difference between the G9, 10 + 11?

Not bothered about Mp as I think all have more than enough, but was wondering if any of them are better regarded than the others.

Was also looking at the S90 but as I used to have a G9 I was swaying that way.

I wouldn't discount the s90 so quickly is much more pocketable than the G11etc which is still quite big.

For the small differnce in price at the moment (about £40) I was thinking the G11. Dont really like the look of the s90.

i'd give it a go first, the G11 is quite big really for a compact, only borderline pocketable. The IQ of the S90 is near enough identical to the G11, with the S90 having a slightly faster lens.
On the other hand, the G11 has more controls on the camera, a hotshoe and a flip up screen. I went through exactly the same choice a few weeks ago and ended up with the S90 simple because it fits in my pocket normally without massive trouser bulge.

I had a G10. Is bigger than other compacts but still pocketable, even though the pockets need to be a bit bigger :-)

When I purchased mine I was after a G9 'cos the focal range was a bit better, if I recall.
However, at this time I found that 2nd hand G9's were more expensive than a new G10.

I found the creative modes too fiddly and I didn't read the Manual. But it was bought just to take snaps and so I didn;t have to have my DSLR kit around my neck at certain times.

The IQ was superb at low ISO's even with full-auto jpegs,

Ruvor, how do you find holiding it with no grip? some reviews I have read say its very easy to drop.

I just bought an S90 from Amazon. £280 and £30 cashback from Canon.

I think that £250 for a raw shooting camera like the S90 is pretty good.

Flash is in a stupid place, and exposure compensation ring is easily knocked, but all in all I'm very pleased with it as a pocketable cameras go.

I have owned a G7 for almost 2 years, great camera, which i sold for an S90 but wasnt really happy with the results compared to my G7's past performance, and now have a G11, which i'm sort of happy with, great image quality, but i mostly use my compact for gig's taking photo's and videos, and the G7 took great high res quality video, with great/clear sound, but the G11 is not so good, canon have taken out the high res video setting, and the video i recorded at a gig the other week was the video was good, but the sound terrible, couldnt make out anything.

In hindsight, all i was really missing was the lack of RAW on the G7, so i think i will maybe get a decent 2nd hand G9 and sell the G11.

Dont get me wrong though, the G11 is a great camera, and excellent image quality, but just found the G7/G9 has the combination of features that suit my needs best.

I see the G10 & 11 not as compacts purely because they are not very compact! I have the s90 and it is properly pockitable and a joy to use. I have found the results to be pretty awesome for such a small unit. The S90 has the same sensor as the G11 aswell as the Digic4 processor.
