IIRC I had this issue with (as far as i'm aware) a genuine battery bought from Amazon (no, not third party sellers). Had to insert it several times before it started to charge.

Powerplanet LP-E6 have been great for me, still going strong after 9 months. Ordered another two, £19 amazing

How do you find they perform compared to genuine ones?
Having just bought a 7D I'm after a couple of spares.

Thanks Drew, that's good to know.
I've been reading several reviews on 3rd party LP-E6's and many say they don't get as many shots out of a charge as they do from a genuine one.
Mind you, at about 1/5 the price they shouldn't really complain.
Reckon I'll order a couple.

Something to consider.
I'm not trying to disagree with the savings being worth it but my personal opinion is this. Two of the most common issue with rechargeable batteries is shorting out and leaking. Both can be detrimental to your camera. If either happens your warranty is void. I heard that they can tell what battery was in it too. I spent over 3k u.s. On my camera so the savings would be 2.5% of that and for me that's not worth it. This is just one view and may be relevant to some and not others. Just food for thought.
