Canon lens advice for rugby

I'm after some input on what lens to go for. I shoot mainly rugby and equine sports.
At the moment I am using a 75-300 USM borrowed from someone who's camera is out of action. I don't want to spend more than £200 max until I have found my feet. I was going to go and get the same as what I've been using and look to upgrade later but is there a better option for now?

Hi Alex

First question is what focal length have you been using with the borrowed 75-300 lens ?

If it's below 250, then the Canon 55-250IS lens is a cracker esp for the price - around £170 new.

If you can spend more / save the Canon 70-300IS is a belter and is around £380 new (prob around £300 2nd hand).

Personnaly, I wouldn't buy one of the Canon 75-300 lenses, I'd either go for the 55-250 or 70-300

For the money the 55-250 is the one everyone seems to recommend. :thumbs:
 
Thanks for the replies. I use the 300 when shooting at professional games (mainly for practice) but could probably get away with losing the extra 50 for amateur matches.I guess its a case of deciding if I could do without the 300 focal length.
Just out of interest what is it that puts people off the 75-300?
 
Thanks for the examples Justyn. I take it your son plays for Ledbury? I have friends that play for the senior team and I usually go over to watch when I'm in that part of the country. Great club with a fantastic atmosphere!
Its looking more like the 55-250 is the one to go for!
 
Right, I've bitten the bullet and ordered the 55-250. Looked at some images online and was impressed with the results.
I'll let you know what I think of it over the 75-300
 
Just a quick update. I'm really pleased with the 55-250 over the 75-300. Images are looking alot sharper. I am missing the extra 50 sometimes but the end images are definately worth it!
