Canon lens compatibility - FF not APS C

Just recently I have been considering upgrading my kit to full frame, and maybe buying a Canon 5d or 5d mk11. However, I have now found out that you can use certain lenses on the crop sensor models but not on the full frame models. As someone using a Sony A700 I found this hard to believe, because the lenses which I use would be compatible throughout the Sony range (obviously not including the A7 type).
So, if I was to buy a FF Canon, which lenses would I be able to use in addition to my M42 lenses with an adaptor?
 
The rear elements of EF-S lenses project further into the body than EF lenses, so if you were to fit them the mirror would catch the back of the lens. Apparently some lenses will work as long as they are not zoomed to a point where the rear element projects too much, but I thought that Canon had adapted the mount to stop you fitting them.

Additionally, the EF-S lenses produce a smaller image circle as they are designed for a smaller sensor. If they were to fit you would be unlikely to get full coverage on a FF sensor (at least of a reasonable quality).

EF lenses will fit Canon crop sensor bodies.

Adaprors for M42 lenses are availsble for FF Canon bodies BUT a user at our camera club has said he has bad a problem on 1 body but I think it was an EOS film body.

Be aware that some M42 lenses will cause mirror damage on Canon's full frame bodies....certain lenses project farther backwards than others and intrude into the arc of the mirror.
