Hi guys!! I've been looking at getting a canon 70-200mm L is usm lens
Now what I've confused myself is version 1or the latest version 2 and at a low ish level in photography am I splitting hairs? Looking at second hand too as cant pay that sort of money for a new one! Lol
Any advise welcomed

Not much help to you

But I have the mk1 and cannot fault it, so I have no need, want or desire to get the mk2
 
I had a Mk1 version and was very happy with it. It was very sharp from f3.5 on and not much softer wide open. However, I got the MkII in summer and it's fantastic. It's unbelieveably sharp wide open throughout the whole range. I paid £1364 new for mine but have seen them at £1150-1200 second hand. IMO it's definitely worth the difference, I paid £960 for the MkI second hand and for the extra £200ish for the MkII it's well worth it.
 
Had the mark I, it was softish at f2.8! Got the Mark II last year for £600 more (paid £1600 back then). I thought 600 was worth that sharpness so £300 to me is a no brainer!
 
I have the MKI f2.8 IS and althought it is pretty good wide open I have a hankering for the MKII just so I can get rid of the MKI, 70-300mm L and 100-400mm L lenses and use it with the 1.4x and 2x converters.

From what I can gather there would be no loss in IQ or AF speed.

The 70-200 MKII works well with the 2x converter - I would say you will notice some IQ drop, but little or none with the 1.4x.
 
Hi guys thanks for your feedback, I've been out and bought the v1 version, I got it for £850 with filter that's been on since new, only used a handful of times!
So after reading your comments, I think all in all I've got a fantastic lens so early on in learning photography, if I learn and get to grips in a year or so I might poss upgrade

Enjoy the new toy! I'd simply advise that for focal lengths above about 170mm you use f/3.2+ for the sharpest shots.
