Canon Menu System Compared to Nikon

I am thinking of buying the Nikon D800 and always been a Canon owner, I know the Canons menu system well.

What I would like to know is do people find the menu better or worse than the Canons and are all the buttons and control knobs and so on in the right place.

What I should do is go look at one in the flesh and handle it but not easy as I need to go to the City Centre , all the local camera shops have closed down within the last few years hence having to read lots of reviews and forums.
 
That's an impossible question to answer.


I've used both and prefer Nikon, the menu and button layout just suits me. You've been using canon, so you'll be used to it. There is no better than the other, its personal.
The only way to find out is to use one for a a few weeks. You'll either get used to it and be fine, or hate it and wish you'd never bothered.
 
Such a subjective thing. I am familiar with the Nikon system, and find using Canon confusing. My Canon owning friend finds my Nikon impossible to use. Regular use and familiarity!
 
I take it they are completely different by your replies and I suppose the D800 is more involved than say the other Nikon DSLRs.

Looking at the button layouts they all look well placed and clearly marked , the screen looks Awesome and believe it much better than the Canons.

How does the buttons and control wheels feel like compared to canon as my 60D felt a little poor if I am being honest.
 
The difference in menu or even handling is always a matter of use to it. Do not allow this to be a breaking point for a switch if you have enough good reasons for it.
 
All are alien until you get a feeling and understanding, which just takes time.

My D7000 layout is now fine to me, the menu is easy to navigate, I never feel there is anything hidden or too deep in the menu, there is a nice explanation for all most everything in the menu if you go to it and press the ? button while over it, I find that very informative.

They have nice resistance to the wheels on mine, buttons are good, all are nice and firm and feel designed for your thumb at the back of the camera.

Can't compare to a canon as I have never had or handled one.

It's like switching from right hand drive to left hand drive - Thinking about it makes it seem more difficult than it actually is, but in reality it only takes minutes to adapt.

(I do prefer LHD and Nikon though... :D )
 
I Owned a Sony Nex and found the menu on that well pants to be honest very hard to work around.

I am sure I will get use to the Nikon Menu but always nice to have some comments and re assurance from members who actually own Nikon.
 
I find the Nikon menus better than Canons, the buttons on Nikons are nicer to press too IMO. Obviously it will take getting used to going from one to the other regardless of which is 'better'
 
Like everyone says, it's a personal thing. Personally I find Canon menus to be intuitive and Nikon ones to be bizarrely illogical, but as the previous posts demonstrate many people think the opposite.

However, one other thing that *might* be an issue for you is the placement of the camera controls. I find that I really cannot get on with the two control dials on Nikon DSLRs; I find both of them, and especially the front one, really hard to use without adjusting my grip on the camera. Obviously most people aren't bothered, so maybe it's just because I have short pudgy fingers. But it's a real annoyance to me, and it's baked into the Nikon DNA so it's the same on all their DSLRs. Make sure you check issues like this.

On the other foot, I hated the canon big ring on the back and ended up poking my nose everytime I wanted to change anything. The Nikon front and rear control dials are so much more comfortable.
 
With never owning a Nikon I suppose you could say I am throwing myself in at the deep end with the D800 , but I am a quick learner and I am sure I would also appreciate all the extra features the D800 has over my last camera the Canon 60D.

All I need to do now is find some good glass so it doesn't disappoint me when I come to use it and with the Southport Air show coming up I better make my mind up pretty quick but my hand is hovering over the Buy Now button already.
