Canon or Nikon?

Or Sony or Pentax or Samsung or Olympus, or . . . .?

Should I settle in with popcorn or suggest the use of the search function to find one of the countless other threads on the topic?

Seriously it generally depends on what you do with it, your budget and how you like the camera in the hand. After that it tends to be price and what your mates think.

I started with Canon having not really looked at the others (my mate had one). Played with a D700 and fell in love with it and so switched. It's great for me. I didn't have a million Canon lenses so the switch was painless.

Very much 'horses for courses' though.

Tried both felt no real difference so got a canon at a very good price So price won in the end

Started with Canon for a number of years - recently switched to the Nikon D300 because of AF performance and design ethos. The Nikon more fits my way of working and better implementation of auto ISO etc - it also doesn't have scene modes which is a real plus for me

Nikon.
I tried both D300 & EOS 40D and thought the Nikon more robust and intuitive to use.

Doesn't have to turn into a Canon vs Nikon debate. Read the OP's question.

Which did you choose and why?????

Phil

I chose Canon for the following reasons.

Had a great old Canon Sureshot P&S Film camera that did me great service. Also used an Olympus P&S film camera that I didn't get such great results with.

When I moved to digital I stuck with a Canon P&S (Ixus) for that reason.

So for the same reason when I upgraded to DLSR I stuck with Canon. My sister also had a Canon so I guess we could swap lenses.

Simple as that really. Maybe some naive brand loyalty in there but not disappointed. Would I do it differently knowing what I do now?

Which feels better in your hand... and which menu you prefer.

1. My wifes hand
2. AJ's evening menu ... food to die for

As for camera systems "why" ... who cares © ... at the end of the day we are all photographers.

Nikon

Started off with an Olympus OM10, then switched to Nixon with the advent of AF (olympus never offered AF back then) and have been with Nikon ever since, purely brand loyalty, although Canon haven't offered anything to make me change.

But if you gave me an endless supply of money,???

I moved years ago when autofocus came in,I wanted to stay with Nikon because I had a gorgeous FA at the time but the Nikon in my price range was the truly awful F70 (multi coloured display et al) so I moved over to Canon with an EOS 50 and have stayed there ever since. However if the lottery ever comes up it will be a move back to Nikon with the d3

Did not like the egonomics of the Nikon or Canon, not been a fan of Pentax or Sony machines so bought an Olympus E3 and love it.

Started out on an old Olympus OM10 film SLR, reverted to little compacts when digital started to become popular and then when I bit the bullet for a DSLR I'd played around with a friends Nikon D70 and a Canon 300D. Liked them both and probably should have gone Nikon since my wife had a Nikon film SLR with a couple of lenses but for some reason I just preferred the Canons when I was in the shop. Got a good deal at the time and have been happy ever since.

Used all sorts for 35mm but started off in digital using Canon. Used it for about 6 years but I got fed up of the rubbish quality of some of the kit (this was all works-owned kit) and when it came to buying m own, just chose Nikon because of the better handing and wetherproofing on the D200.

Started DLSR's with an Oly, adn stayed with them up to and including the E-3.

Had a brief spell with the Canon 40D while waiting for the E-3 to be released), but found the lenses poor.

Sold the E-3 and bought a D700. Awesome capable camera, but still wish i had the Oly just for the lenses - they really are that good, and nothing really compares on other systems (including the Nikon 14-24 and 24-70mm)

I can see an Oly system heading my way in the not too distant future ;)

:)

The D40 felt the best in hand to me and I preferred button placement and menu.

started with Nikon then went on to Canon because of the noise issue and I felt the focus was a bit quicker. To me it's what you feel best with, the camera can only do what the guy/gal behind it tells it to do weather canon, nikon, olympus etc etc.

I chose a Canon DSLR as at the time when I purchased the nikon offerings were very weak (talking 2002 when I made my first purchase).

I remain with Canon due to my investment in lenses and accessories. I have to admit I have been tempted by the D300 a couple of times for it's AF peformance and superior grip, and since I use (for the most part) third party lenses it would not be too hard to make the change. BUT that is only idle temptation by the gearhead in me rather than actual need.

saw the 40d and liked it, tried it in my hand, felt right. so i bought it and have no intention to change.

now i have a bit more experience(complete noob when bought) i am still happy and cant fault the camera, ok, the top end nikons are better at the moment, but there isnt enough to worry the average user.

oh, and if oyu like macro, nikon cant match the mpe65. shame is i havent the money or justification to get one:(

Liked the look and feel of the Nikon and, for an odd reason, have a special attachment to the Nikon brand despite having no previous experience of the brand. Something about rooting for the underdog, I suppose!

I was travelling in Oz in 2006 and a girl lent me a D70 for a evening. I was sold on Nikon then, never even thought about any other companies.

Being a bit of a Sony fan my first DSLR was a Sony a100. Had it for about 6 months and although it seemed fine for most of the time I got a little fed up of the slowish AF, noisy mirror and poor high ISO performance. Not to mention the limited choice and high cost of lenses at the time. I moved to Canon for lens choice. Also have quite a few friends using Canon so can borrow their lenses too :D
