Canon or Tamron? and some other Q's...

This has probably popped up quite a few times but I'm upgrading to FF and I'm looking for a standard zoom lens that I will be using mostly. I have set myself a 3k budget (give or take extra, depending where I order from) and I've managed to source a grey import 6D, or if I can stretch my budget a bit more I can get a 5Diii. No, I'm not bothered about a grey import and I'm not trying to turn this into a domestic about that subject ;). I've narrowed it down to those two camera for my budget/needs. Night photography is what I do most but the more "do it all" factor of the 5diii takes my fancy over the 6D, but the added price of the 5Diii will hit my budget quite a bit.



My main concern: The main lens I would be using, I was thinking of the 24-70 f/2.8 L USM at roughly £1200, but also noticed Tamron do a 24-70 f/2.8 as well. Is there much between the two because the only real way I'd be able to get a 5Diii is if I got the Tamron equivalent of the 24-70 lens at half the price of the Canon one.

What I'm thinking of getting is:

Canon 6D body (or maybe 5Diii depending on cost and WA lens)
24-70 f/2.8 L USM or the Tamron equivalent
70-200 f/2.8 L USM, non IS

Eventually I will be looking to get an ultra wide angle, super telephoto and some sort of prime, but i'm just covering the basics for now.

I have a 6d with 24-70 canon 2.8 and 70-200 canon 2.8 absolutely fav combo Imho tried tamron to me it doesn't have the l feel and when paying money for anything if you have the budget for it do it you won't regret it I spent a long time researching Im glad I did as very happy I own several other cameras and lenses but the majority of my paid work is with this layout
 
I cannot comment about the latest Canon 24-70 but I had a mark one and now have the Tamron 24-70. The Canon mark 1 has the nickname "the brick" and it is as heavy as one. It is very well built and produces very good results. It was however too heavy for me. The Tamron is much lighter, much cheaper and also produces very good results. It also has better IS in my view than the earlier Canon. You can buy a new Tamron with warranty for about the same as a second hand Mark 1 Canon. The fact that I kept the Tamron and sold the Canon demonstrates which I preferred of those two.

Of course the new Canon 24-70 Mk2 might change the equation completely - I am afraid I have no hands on knowledge of that lens at all. If however it is as heavy as the Mark 1 you might want to consider if you can hand hold this without tremor at night when you might be using slower shutter speeds.

The 6D is a very good camera. The 5D mk3 is a great camera. The 6D is reputed to have less noise at high ISO - it might be worth viewing might shots on Flickr for both cameras.

Whatever your final decision all the kit you mention is quality and you will not be disappointed. Good luck.
 
Thanks all. I've been shooting with a 550d for many years now and it wasn't till I had a go of my sisters 6d at Christmas that made me want to upgrade to FF. The main thing that is making me edge towards the 6d is the noise performance in low lighy, it's just brilliant imo. But then again the 5d has other tempting features like better video (1080p 60fps), which I also do a lot of.

As of the canon 24-70 I'm unsure whether or not it is the Mk2. Pretty sure it is as it's on nearly every site I go on and around £1100-1500 depending where I look.

Edit. Yes it's the Mk2 and it's 812g in weight. I can keep a steady hand so weight doesn't really bother me.I do a lot of extreme long range shooting and I put my breathing to practice when taking the camera out as well :)

I would go for the mk1 24-70 and then get a prime like the sigma art mate that's just my two pence though
 
oh I have the 5d3 and 6d prefer the 6d for ease the 5dmkiii for video

The Mk1 has been discontinued and I'll be getting a prime at some point. 18-55 and 55-250 are the lenses I use the most with my current camera so looking for similar with the move to FF. I'll even be after something longer eventually. It's the video on the 5d3 that really does it for me, 1080p at 60fps? the 6D is only 720p at 60fps. Not bothered about the rest of the differences.
 
Just watched a detailed video about the Canon Vs Tamron lenses. there's not a lot between them apart from the Canon one is a tiny tiny bit sharper at the edges and very distant objects. I don;t know if I can justify spending the extra on the Canon lens after watching that video.
 
Their is well looked after used examples on the forum classifieds of the mk1 for under 600 ;-) it comes down to personal choice I have had tamron lenses let me down several times so I don't touch them but it's personal opinion
 
If it's video that's important get the 5d mk 3 without doubt
 
I think I will end up going for the 5d mk3. Video for me is just as important as night shooting. The temptation for the ISO performance of the 6d is just as much as the video capabilities of the 5d mk3. Either way i'll probably end up putting Magic Lantern on it for raw video anyway.
 
I've got the Tamron 24-70 vc and have tried the Canon mkii equivalent. The Canon is noticeably quicker to focus but that isn't an issue for me. Image quality wise I couldn't tell the difference but then it was on a 7D.

Just bare in mind the quality control at Tamron can be hit and miss. My first one back focussed beyond what I could correct throigh AFMA, my second is fine. I got mine through DigitalRev with the fourm discount.

Thanks. I'll be buying from new so it will have a warranty anyway. Or will the warranty even accept it back if it's a dodgy copy? they might just say my pictures are crap lol
 
The Tamron 24-70 VC is a lovely lens. I upgraded from a 24-105L and IMO the Tamron is the far better lens when mated to my 6D. It is not quite as sharp as the the Canon 24-70 II but it has VC and costs half the price. Great lens.

I've spent the last few hours looking at sample pictures between the two. To be honest I'm surprised how well the Tamron does. A bit softer round the edges but nothing to moan about for the price and VC also. It won't be such a hit on my budget either and will allow me to get the 5d3 body as well. I thought 3k would get me sorted, having to look at all grey import stuff lol

If its defective any warranty should cover it. I took my lens to H Lehman's who DigitalRev use, they confirmed the next day it was faulty
and I had a brand new one land in a few days. Pretty smooth process.
