I am struggling between the 2 cameras. I dont really care if LX5 is bigger and if S100 does not have hotshoe. I just want to know which of the 2 is better in image quality, full manual functionality and focus speeds and aperture.

Which one do you think is better. Any advice, pros and cons and whatever you think would help me make the decision would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

just to add, The lX5 has bigger sensor. Better shutter speed range. does this make it better in real world use.

If you prefer the Nikon P300 or Olympus XZ-1. Please say why you would choose one of these 2.

I went through those sorts of cameras and found them much of a muchness. After a few months I was never happy with them and kept going back to huge DSLR. I ended up going slightly bigger and getting a Samsung NX100 (which are only £179 from Argos outlet) and it operates quickly all round and the image quality is SLR quality as same sensor size and very good standard lens.
Only saying this because you made the comment about size not being issue between LX5 and S100 but obviously the NX100 is bigger again so may rule it out anyway.

I bought a p300. I bought it because it is bigger to hold than the s95 (which I tried for a couple of days), it also seems more straight forward than an s95 - everything makes sense for menus and button placement. The lens is 1.8 although it does go up quite a bit when fully zoomed. It has excellent low light performance, especially night portraits. It is also significantly cheaper than the others you have mentioned. I have a p300 set on my flickr site if you want to have a look, they are all out of camera. I would def recommend!

There is a GF1 + standard zoom in the classifieds... (not mine) I'd pick that one up to be honest.

Heard the LX5 has messed it up and it does not seem as sharp as the LX3 was. So I might be looking for an LX3 as well if you are determined to go with a P&S

I was really interested in the F2.0 apertures on the lx5 or s100. If I get the gf1 with the kit lens 14-42mm lens. Do you think that it would have more advantage over the F2.0 aperture on the lx5 and s100?

What did you go for in the end?

When looking for an advanced compact I got my choice down to the XZ-1 and the LX5. After looking at shed loads of images from each camera I decided to go for the XZ-1 as the images looked more like they had come from a DSLR and not a compact. I have had a S95 which was a great little camera. I still think the XZ-1 is just about the best advanced compact out there. I have tried the S100 and have been impressed with the IQ but had to stay within the compounds of the shop. I love the features the S100 has especially the way you can chose the focal length. 35mm equiv is my fave focal length and the S100 can give me that easily with a turn of the dial on the front.

Thanks

Does the xz-1 work easily and well in jpeg and full auto?

I thought they had the same size sensors? But the big difference is the S100 is CMOS, not CCD making the S100 the better sensor.

I owned the LX5 and swapped it for an S90 (soon to be upgraded to S100) because the LX5 is too bulky to be a compact, it had a lens cap making it fiddly and slow compared to the Canon. Apart from that they both take great images and the S100 should be even better.

This is a good read on lx5, p300 and s95

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/panasonic-lx5-vs-canon-s95-vs-nikon-p300-15928

I want IQ and low light workings my priority as will be taking pics of toddler and babies inside etc.

P300 is apparently not as good as s95, so I've dismissed the Nikon even though a Nikon dslr owner.

S95 if I wanted true compact or s100 if budget permitted.

I personally prefer xz-1 over lx5
These two are bulkier but if I was out, phone, keys, wallet would occupy trousers pocket
So the compact would live in a coat pocket or baby changing bag, so dont need ultra slim.

I missed out on a xz-1 and having looked at another forum the used prices range £160-200 depending on condition, age, accessories etc.
So looking for one of these.
