Got my D3100 and I am really pleased with it. I am looking at getting a flashgun, I did use a 430EX II on my Dads 350d, and got used to using it, I believe it had the ability to help the camera focus in low light.

What model Nikon would be similar spec to the Canon 430??

The D3100 has a built in autofocus assist lamp, which is what you are referring to on that flashgun. The SB600 is directly comparable but if you really want to keep the costs down, the yongnuo 560/565 flashguns are very similar in build quality and do pretty much everything you could want in such a device.

Just tried the AF assist, it only works in the simple modes, ie not on P, M, A or S...

Pretty sure the 350D/430EX combo did the AF assist in all modes.

I've figured it out, I've been to the Zoo today so had AF-servo on. It does work on single AF

These days, the SB-700 has taken over from the SB-600. The '600 is a nice gun - solid and with decent features - but the '700 really does pretty much match the fabulous SB-800, even though it's designated a mid-range price.

Not sure if CLS is a feature your D3100 can utilise but off camera use is fantastically simple on the SB700, as is setting the function.

Well I bought a new SB-700 today, tried it a few times comparing it to the on-camera flash, using Totoro as my model.
