Hi, I have a Canon 7d and am looking for a walkaround lens. I have shortlisted the Canon 15-85mm and the Canon 24-105L. I'd be interested in your advice on which I should go for.

Thanks

I have the 24-105 on my 50D, but then back it up with the 10-22.

I bought my son the 15-85 for his 600D and it's rarely off his camera - excellent lens and with the wider end very useful as a single lens on a crop.

Hi

There are various threads and long discussions about which is best walkabout lens and ESP which is best focal length - have a look through some, it may well help your thoughts.

For me, I had the Canon 28-135 and it was a great focal length for what I required. There are lots who feel the 24 / 28 mm isn't wide enough.

The 15-85 is supposed to be a cracker of a lens, I've not used one personally, so can't really give advice directly on that lens.

Another one to look at / think about is the Canon 17-55IS. Has a constant F2.8 and IS, but is a little short on length.

Hope this is of some help ...

Thanks guys. :) I take your point Byker that it might not be wide enough and that a WA lens might make sense too.

Andyred, I think that the extra 20mm at the long end of the 24-105 would be useful though. The 17-55 would definitely be too short. I usually stick at shooting around 85-90mm, it seems. :)

I'm assuming that the L lens will be much better built, but would it be a clear winner in IQ terms, or would it be negligible? I guess I'm wondering if, at not a massive difference in price, I am favouring the L lens simply because of the red ring!

Someone asked the same question on a tread here not long ago, Unless your gonna upgrade to a Full Frame camera like a 5D anytime soon the best lens you can fit to your 7D is the Canon 15-85mm its a newer lens an has a better IQ with some very nice sharp pictures.

Other than that if its low light shooting and portraits you like to do mostly consider the Canon 17-55 f2.8 is a suberb lens too.

Thanks Hotshots :)

Appreciate the links arad85 ... I'll have a look at the monw. :)

I got my 24-105 L with a 5D2 kit and it spent more time on my 7D and later on my 60D than it ever has on my 5D2 or 5D3. It's fantastic on a FF camera, but I've normally got a 70-200 on that, so the 24-105 lives on the crop body. It gives excellent results consistently on any body and is a great lens overall.

Much appreciated. That's redressing the balance a bit for all the 15-85mm preferences in the links above.
