Canon x2 extender query

When I put my x2 extender on my 100-400 lens, I find that if I view through the viewfinder that it only works with manual focussing and no red af lights appear.

However if I use liveview on my 650d, whilst the red af focus lights dont show, the lens does automatically focus in the focus zone of the screen.

Is this normal ?

Without the converter the lens focusses automatically fine.

Yes, perfectly normal. The AF sensors are limited to apertures of f/5.6 or larger whilst Liveview has no aperture limit.
