I had a thread on here a couple of weeks ago re lenses for my D100. After reading a ton more threads on the subject, I am still no clearer to making a final decision (why oh why are there so many different things on the market). Anyhow in the 24-80 bracket I am down to the choice between:
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM (approx £600),
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG (£350)
and the
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) (approx £270).

Which one is probably the best for optical quality? Is the HSM lens worth almost double the cost of the non-HSM? This will be the walkabout lens with hopefully some low light stuff.

(the 70-200 range is still up in the air but part of me is tempted by the vrII  )

HSM is much better optically (had non HSM for a day and it made me cry like a baby).

Tamron is a safer and cheaper option IMHO.

And yet I am sure that puddleduck had an hsm 24-70 and had mo end of probls with it being soft.

I have the non hsm and I am very happy with it.

If you are looking for optical quality and price, you won't hear many bad things said about the Tamron 28-75. Focus ring moves a bit and build quality isn't top quality, but not much else.

Have you thought about the Tamron 17-50/2.8, especially as the D100 is a crop sensor??

see this is what happens as soon as I think I have the choice narrowed down - another one gets thrown into the frame. I will be changing the body a bit later in the year poss a D300 unless I drool too much at the D700. The lens choices are getting so confusing as soon as I think I've decided, my head gets turned by something else. On a good note I bought a 10-20 today from LCE and its as minty as anything (orig box, hood, lens bag thingy). Part of me is just thinking that maybe I should just hunt for a 2nd hand Nikon 24 or 28-70, and spend that bit extra but know I'm going to have a good lens for a long time.

Sadly even used Nikkor 24-70 2.8 seem to go for £900 plus. I found The Beast (28-70)Nikkor for just under £700.
It is worthy of it's reputation. If you can stretch to it you'll not regret it. Goes well with the D700, when you have saved enough !
