A m8 has put forward a challenge for both of us to spend 3 months shooting with early digital bodies, we had a budget of £80 to buy a body and zoom I've bought a nikon d70s with 28-85mm g lens he has a canon eos 20d as kit zoom should be interesting lol.
 
Very comparable cameras, he might clinch it if you decide to shoot sports though :D

If you're allowed use off cam flash you have the edge though with the 1/500 sync

I thought the flash sync may come in handy got mine at a local 2nd hand shop for £65 with bag and 2 batteries result, we just need to sort out ground rules and themes.

What about lenses? what are you allowed on that front? That can be just as important

I had a 20D for over seven years. They're good cameras. Not sure about the kit lens though, my favourite lenses on my 20D were the Sigma 50 and 85mm f1.4 and 12-24mm.
 
I like the idea of this. Have thought about doing it myself. Keen to hear how you get on.
 
I'm doing myself a similar thing: buy a body and lens as cheap as possible to always bring with me.

So I bought a 10D with grip and batteries for £35 and a 50mm 1.8 mk1 for €50.

I know the 20D has some advantages, but I already have a 40D and a 5D (not expensive bodies, I know), so it had to be a good cheap 10D. :)

In good light any old dslr will still beat the pants off of any smart phone or even most modern compacts for sure. They still have much larger sensors than those smaller cameras. You can still get buttery smooth bokeh with the right lenses. The images were good enough when they were new, the images will still have the same quality today. But they do suffer badly with that old tech in low light, and of course modern dslrs will have much better image quality overall, but I have been very surprised when viewing images on the likes of Flickr. Scroll down to the exif and see a 10D! and it's a bit of an eye opener.
