Changing from Canon to Nikon

OK...I've arrived at a decision on this. I'm going to buy a D700 with an AF-S 24-70 F2.8G ED zoom. I'm (at some point) going to need to replace the Sigma 100-300 F4 EX DG zoom I have for the 7D (superb lens BTW) with a comparable alternative for the Nikon. I'd like the replacement to be a 400mm at the longest setting. I've been reading loads of reviews regarding these lens types but have concluded that it's a bit of mixed bag. I'm not clear on what I'll buy TBH.

With Canon it would be easy, the 100-400. It seems to tricky to draw precise parallels across systems.

Canon on the face of it don't seem to have a lens as good as the Nikon I've mentioned. If anyone can advise me differently then please do!

Any real world advice, opinions gratefully received! :thumbs:
 
If canon do the lens your looking for, why change brand ?
 
a 70-200 f/2.8 VR I or II with a 2X TC ?
 
Sigma 120-400 OS?
Mine was a corker and pin sharp even at 400mm.
 
Why not buy the Canon 5D MKII (or MKIII if budget allows) and the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L. The lens is comparable with the Nikon (better?), you can keep your Siggy 100-300mm and get almost double the number of mega-pixels at the same time. If you want a 400mm focal length, you can crop the 5D MKII images with the Siggy and probably still get more megapixels than the Nikon offers.

Maybe he wants a camera that has a decent auto focus system. :thumbs:
 
I'm not sure that according to the test reviews at least that Canon do have a lens that equals the Nikon zoom I've talked about. I know these tests are subjective at times but they are useful while not gospel.

Agreed the Sigma is a cracking lens, but it's the thick end of £2k. S/H value...not sure of that at the moment. Research required!

If I stayed with Canon it would have to be a Mk3.

Very good points made here though, crop factors of the higher res files a good one also. The Sigma is also discontinued now and a fine lens.

Even many of Canon's prime lenses appear to be undeveloped since they were introduced.

Please keep opinions and suggestions coming, there's nothing like experience!
 
New to Nikon and think the images they produce are really awesome.
 
I have a D700 with the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 (newest model) and use it with the the 1.4x tele when required.

Works well for me and if I could insert an image using my iPad I'd show you :-(

Yep, that's the one. Think I paid about £400 second hand.
 
The sigma 120-400mm is an interesting one...

When I first got it I was amazed. Everything looked sharp but as I used it more and more I realised they only looked sharp because they were large subjects filling the screen.

Then I looked back at all my 400mm images and actually found them rather soft...so I sold it!

I can post images of the different focal lengths if required.
 
My mistake...it's a 120-300 f2.8. Doh!
Still £2000 though!!!!!
 
Anyhow, got my D700 today with 24-70. Very happy, love the build quality. Got my head in the manual as it's my first Nikon after 20+ years with Canon!

I prefer Sigma lenses, always liked them as much as Nikon.

If I could I would go totally to Sigma. Sharpness is very subjective and one test I always to, is print at around 20x16 and look at it. If its soft, it goes in for service. If sharp happy days.
Never ever to I pixel peep at 100% for sharpness.

I have a 100-300F4 EX-DG for my 7D, no complaints at all. Brilliant lens. Up for sale shortly. May try and find a s/h one for Nikon.
