Cheaper alternatives to Nikon 24mm 1.4G?

Hi guys I have the above lens which is an absolute corker. The trouble is due to recently moving house i'm not sure I can justify that much money sitting in my camera bag.

So If you were in the same position as me in that i'd like to sell this lens to free up some cash what 'cheaper' nikon branded lens would you get to replace it.

I'd want either 24 or 28mm focal range as i use it mainly for landscapes though I do use the shallow depth of field capabilities for environmental portraits now and again :)

Any thoughts?
 
or 24mm f/2.8 D (may not be able to deliver the depth of field that you require though, but very nice lens for the money).

The reason I ask is I have a 50mm 1.8G which was very cheap but the optical performance is very impressive. I sold a 85mm 1.4G for this and don't regret it at all

Haven't used the 28mm, but it would fit the bill, only downside is the cost. If you look at the price of a used 28mm f/1.4 (£1,800+) then the 28mm f/1.8G is a bit of a steal. You could always try the 24mm f/2.8 or what about older manual lenses if you are mainly a landscape shooter?

hhm this is one of the others i've been contemplating. But you've hit the nail on the head in that the 2.8 may not give me the buttery background I love in my portraits :thinking:

Totally agree it is a steal at about £619. I'd prefer to keep AF lenses as they are easier for those quick portraits of the family :)

Does anyone have any samples from any of the 'cheaper' alternatives?
 
Have you thought about replacing the 24mm f/1.4 with 2 lenses like the 28mm f/2.8 which would work just as well for landscapes £350 new and its as sharp when stopped down as the 24mm f/1.4 and only a bit worse in the corners wide open. Then get something for the portraits like the 35mm f/1.8 which works really well wide open on a full frame camera or a 50mm f/1.4 if you buy both S/H you will free up a fair bit of cash.

Thats an interesting option. But I was under the impression the 35mm 1.8G only worked on DX cameras, I should have mentioned I'm shooting with a D700.

I do have the 50mm 1.8G though and its a fine lens, just sometimes not wide enough indoors.
 
The Samyang 24mm 1.4 is amazing - MF only but registers on the D3/D700 (AE Version) with metering and EXIF and about £350
 
It's pin sharp. Obviously, being MF, you have to nail it when shooting wide open but on the D3, the focus confirmation dot in the bottom left of the viewfinder is very accurate.
 
Just thought i'd update those interested.

I sold my 24mm 1.4G (my fave ever wide angle) and today my new toy arrived.

Nikon 28mm 1.8G. Just done a couple of test shots at my desk at work and boy is this thing sharp and the OOF areas are rendered superbly. Plus the minimum focus distance on this thing is very impressive :thumbs:

yes I loose 4mm on the wide end but hey for landscapes i'll just pull bak with my feet, so am I happy with the switch. Well its early days and I need to give it a thorough testing but early impressions are very positive.

oh and the extra £700 floating in my bank account gives me a very warm feeling inside haha. :D

Thanks for the update, to be honest since the 28G was announced I'd been thinking along the same lines, but I think I would regret it down the line once the extra money had been spent on something else and I was left looking at the not-quite-as-wide-or-fast 28G :'(

However, 28mm is never going to look like 24mm no matter how far you walk back, the FOV is different and you can't change that perspective. That 4mm makes a big difference. I must admit the 'zoom with your feet' line is a pet hate of mine, it's impossible to replicate a different focal length by moving further forward or backward :bang: and relax... :lol:

Anyway I hope the switch works well for you :thumbs:
