Cleaning sensor on an infrared converted camera?

Hi all,

I've developed some nasty dust bunnies on my IR converted D100. Now I've no problem in using sensor swabs (have done on my D300 many times), that's fine, but what I wasn't sure about is can I do any more damage to a sensor that's had it's IR filter removed when using stuff like sensor swabs?

Should I change to a different sensor cleaning kit?

Many thanks

I would talk to the people who did the conversion. IIRC, some places replace the normal filter just in front of the sensor with one that allows the required wavelengths through and that MIGHT be more easily damaged by the solvent based sensor cleaning solutions/swabs.

They don't remove the filter and leave the sensor uncovered, they replace it with a piece of optical glass, so it's perfectly safe to use swabs.

Alas I got it off eBay so no idea who got it done originally :(

Hopefully Flash is right and it's just a glass strip in front now and will be safe, guess there's no way to easily check either?

Hi Carl,

It might be worth contacting Advanced Camera Services 'cos they're the most well known of the IR conversion companies... They'd probably be able to give you some advice.

You can find their website HERE.

Hope that helps,
Si

Even if the IR and AA filters are completely removed with no replacement, the sensor is not just bare photoelements. The sensor is covered by CFA (colour filter array), a layer of microlenses and additional quartz or thin layer of protective glass (in that order). So you can use your swabs without hesitation.

Thanks Si,

I'll drop them an email just to confirm what Alexey suggests as well then, hopefully I can't do any harm (apart from the usual :p) cleaning the sensor on my D100 then :)

fingers crossed :)

Thank you all

My information comes from a guys who did a few mods stripping CFA array from a sensor and converting cameras to pure B&W. One of those guys converted D100 and described the process of removing the glass glued to the sensor on top of microlenses and CFA.
