could i clean the camera mirror myself or leave well alone ive managed to get a finger mark on it:bang:
 
They are quite delicate as the reflective coating is on the outside, not protected by glass like a normal mirror.
If you have the right cleaning equipment it shouldn't be too difficult though. I think the main thing is not to rub too hard.
 
Mirrors are incredibly easy to scratch.
 
DO NOT TOUCH THE MIRROR . A Finger touch puts enough acid on to the mirror to attack the silver. A little puff ball is all that is required to blow away any dust, not that they matter. The dust has no effect on the final shot.
 
I'd recommend a trip to your local friendly camera repair centre for a full clean.

Call it a lesson learned.

That sounds a bit categorical... I have heard all these warnings before yet I have cleaned my D200 mirror a number of times and not scratched it even a bit.

To OP, I'd say you have to be extremenly cumbersome and sloppy to scratch it if you using the right tools. I found that using the sensor cleaning swabs works quite well (just do be sensible and don't apply excessive force).

Contrary to what being said here I do think that cleaning the mirror and mirror chamber is something that needs to be done periodically. I found that it reduced my needs to clean the sensor. Besides, having seen it a few times, if somebody was "unlucky" to use the compressed air can to clean the mirror box whilst pointing the can tilted up or down, the spray of liquid compressed air could fog the mirror so it won't go away and needs to be wiped out. Done that for such an "unlucky" friend already ;)

May I point out the silver is on the rear of the glass you do not come in contact with it.
Much is talked about cleaning mirrors and sensors.
Most put about by manufacturers of cleaning kits.
One you do not clean the sensor only the glass filter in front of it, as long as you clean both with care you be OK I clean mine and have had no problem
 
thanks for the help guys i took the bull by the horns a cleaned it with very gentle strokes with a cotton bud worked a treat the blew it out with a blower brush never again :nuts::gag::naughty:
 
The carbon bit on a lenspen will clean it no problem just be careful, i did an old 350D that was covered in fingerprints cleaned it no problem erm also did the sensor with it aswell :)

looked like new after i finished inside.
