Close up filters

I've been looking at close up filters as an inexpensive way of experimenting with macro. They can be had for round about £10 or so but the real question is would it be a waste or should i go for something like a raynox dcr 150 / 250

I tried those £10 filters for about a day, and decided I'd wasted my money. I use a Raynox 250 now, which I love, but I have to team it up with a flash on a bracket to get the best from it. I can't get away with using it without flash. Lots of shots on my Flickr below.

Cheapies  Raynox

I got a set of those £10 eBay ones and while OK for some casual fun they aren't good for much else, they tend to cause quite bad chromatic aberration if you do colour images, you could get away with them for doing B&W images though.

I agree with the above but they're ok for the money.

They're not fantastic images, but these should give you some idea of what to expect:

They look pretty good to me - I especially like the tape measure. What filters were you using? A branded one (like the Hoya ones) or cheapy £10-for-the-set ones?

They're a 4-piece set, branded "Sonia" :D and were about £12 I think, on Ebay (I didn't go for the very cheapest, just in case). They even have a stunningly beautiful leather-look plastic case. :D These are the ones I have.

A hint - if you do get them, forget auto focus. Switch to manual focus and get used to focussing by delicately moving the subject/the camera. The dof is incredibly shallow, even at very small apertures!

Those images look good, but I think I will get a raynox.
Next question is do I go for the 150 or 250:thinking:

£12? I think the photos must be testament to your skill rather than the kit! But for £12, I may as well take a punt...

Haha, I wouldn't call it skill, just patience, but thanks all the same - I'll take all the compliments I can get!

Have fun with the lenses. :)
