Cokin filter kits

filters are standard sizes and square Mark - the holder can take up to 3 filters at once- you buy an adaptor ring for each lens, so you can use with any lens you own- simples :D

Google- cokin adaptor rings fella and find the sizes you need

not a problem, my pleasure Mark

Amazon is a good place to find the rings

Ebay does ones for £15 from China but metal not like the plastic English ones

the ones I have are metal and from Amazon  and about £7 a pop - why pay £15 from evil bay makes no sense at all and Cokin is a FENCH make NOT English

Also remember wider than a 24mm and you will need the wideangle holder (which only holds 1 filter at a time).

I'd recommend you get the two adapter rings (as cheaply as possible) a standard filter holder, you want a set of Graduated NDs, probably a 2 and a 3 stop soft edge and a 2-3 stop hard edge (the part where it goes from ND to clear is a shaper line).

Beyond that ND filters, 2,3+ stop for allowing daylight shooting at slower speeds (a 10 stop is the ultimate).

If you are shooting black and white film then Yellow, Orange and Red filters are a must. They enhance certain elements of an image, improve contrast, make flesh tones brighter, or give the sky better contrast.

This image used 3 filters (Ilford XP2 B&W Film, ISO 400, a 2 Stop Graduated ND filter with a Soft Edge to bring the sky in line with the land in terms of exposure, a yellow filter to reduce the blue haze and glare from the clouds and imporove definition, and a 3 stop ND to allow me to use a longer shutter speed)

It might be worth considering a circular polariser that will fit the Cokin filter holder as well (they are really useful in certain circumstances).

Start with graduated NDs and build up though. Also be aware that if you get serious about using filters, the Cokins won't cut it long term. Stacking them up can cause some colour casting (a magenta tinge to images is fairly common).

If you don't want to pay for a wide angle holder, buy a replica holder and cut two slots off!

5 min job and done!

So just to get this right, any filter kit will fit my A65? I have just the 18-55mm lens at the moment and want to get some filters.. Mainly just to protect my lens!

Then buy a circular UV filter it screws onto the front of your kit lens which has a 55mm thread- I know as I have an a65 :D

Superb Lez.

So this is all I need?

How are you finding the A65? Good isn't it?!
I do need a 50mm and a 35mm though desperately!

Let's start an A65 club! It's a great camera :)

Dominic, the circular UV filter will screw onto the kit lens, then if you want to use filters in something like a Cokin holder, that will screw onto the front of the UV, using the apropriate (55mm) adaptor ring.

The Sony 50mm prime (f1.8) is a lovely lens; the one I keep on by default. There are probably better lenses about, but not for the money, and it'll give you a real step up from the kit lens. However, the filter thread is smaller than the kit lens (49mm from memory), so you'd need a second UV and different Cokin adaptor ring to fit it.

I have a P series Cokin and I honestly do not care for it. I was using it for landscapes but it was not stopping the exposure enough for what I was trying to do. (ND graduated 3 stops).
I tried stacking two of them and (imo) the image quality was bad, vignetting horrible.

It's a shame that affordable filters are basically low quality do to being resin instead of good glass. I am currently looking at the Lee system but geez they are expensive.

If you are serious about quality I would save your money and buy a Lee or Scheider.
