Granddaughter would like an upgrade, body only, from a Canon 350D for a college photography course, suggestions please, it will be from the bank of granddad,

Sounds like an excuse to milk the bank of granddad. Tell her you'll get her a new one when she passes and there's nowt wrong with the 350D that won't allow her to get through the course!
 
buy her a film camera :-)
350d doesn't have live view, or video, can't remmber what else it lacks

The 550d would be a nice upgrade and relatively cheap these days but the 600d models usually have a good offer on them in the likes of currys. Obviously you should nip down and have a look at them so she can handle them. Maybe the 100d too?
 
I used to have a 350D for a number of years, before upgrading to a 5D3. I still have the 350D and used it last weekend - so much lighter than the 5D3! Are there any prerequisites on what functions her camera should have in order to fulfill the course? Does it need to have Liveview and video capabilities? What lenses does she currently have for her 350D? If they're all EF-S, then that'll rule out a FF body. How much does the Bank of Grandad expect to be funding for this? Answer these questions and we might be able to narrow down the suggestions......
 
If she is smaller, like me, she might enjoy the 100D. I bought one this summer and I love it.
 
I started out with a 550D and it was a great camera to start with. Got a load of features and you can get some great photos from it, even from kit lenses. When I was left some money in a will I got a 5D2 and 7D but I loved the 550D so much that I gave it to the wife instead of selling it. Only when we'd amassed 5 bodies between us did I sell it but it was still a wrench.
 
i bought my daughter a 20d off of a good chap on here for here A level photography course and put a 50mm F1.8 lens on it to get her to compose with her feet rather than relying on zoom
a nice cheep setup i don't have to worry about too much if it gets damaged ( we are talking teenagers here )

the cameras they have at the collage for the pupils to use are 1100d's with the kit lens i wanted something basic and easy to use i find the 1100d's fiddly when it comes to changing settings

again it depends on the bank of grandad on how much you spend :)
i'm a cheapskate :)
