Colour in RAW straight from Camera

When shooting in RAW (I am doing so majority of the time), I realise that the camera settings make no difference to the final image (Canon 40d). What I might be seeing on the back of the LCD monitor if in Landscape mode is not what is produced on the screen in Lightroom before PP.

I find that the pictures dont particularly have vibrant rich colours in them and all require PP'ing to bring them up to standard. Is there something I'm not doing right with the camera or is it that RAW images do tend to come out flat before PP'ing?

I think that the image on the lcd is based on a jpeg that has settings applied to it, whereas ypour RAW image doesn't have any sharpeness, saturation etc applied. Thats as I understand it, I could be wrong :)

as above, raw is what it says on the tin, raw data and jpeg has all your enhancements applied

as far as i can remember the nef stores the enhancement data in a sidecar file that viewnx/capturenx etc can interpret but lightroom etc can't

couldn't comment for canon though

Hi Rob,

Load one of your RAW files into Canon's Digital Photo Professional, should have come with your camera, and see what the settings are. I always get good rich colours in my RAW files and sometimes even have to reduce the saturation on some colourful images ie product shots of toys with lots of reds, oranges yellows etc.

Cheers

Yes - what you are seeing on the camera's LCD is an in-camera JPEG produced using whatever in-camera settings you have set at the time - the actual RAW image has no processing done to it until you do it yourself in a seperate program.

I usually use those settings as the basis of whatever P&P I subsequently do - hence my 'News' workflow is almost as quick as someone shooting JPEG-High (one argument I hear a lot from my ill-informed Military colleagues is that shooting RAW is too slow...Muppets!).
I set Photoshop/Bridge to display the thumbnails using those camera pre-sets (found that somewhere in the RAW preferences section) and then adjust accordingly - usually just a tweak of white-balance and curves before opening in Photoshop and doing all the other stuff - cropping, resizing for transmission, file info etc etc...

colour space has no effect on a RAW file either - you set the colour space when you make the jpeg.

You do assign the colour space when you open it in your software I like to open in Adobe RGB Tiff 16 bit to get Max out of the RAW

yep depends what sw you use i suppose - I set the colour space when I export in LR.
