We're off to Florida for 2 weeks in Sept and after much thought i've finally decided i'm leaving the SLR's at home as i don't want photography to overtake a fun family holiday.

Anyway i'm looking for a compact, basically i'm buying it just for the holiday, though i'm sure it'll get some use after.

I've been having a quick look at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ8 and its range and features look quite impressive.

Has anyone got any experience with it, any likes/dislikes etc.

Or can anyone reccommend anything else, i only really looked at Panasonic as i know a few people with very cheap point n shoot versions that are pretty decent for the price of them.

Thanks in advance.
Mark.

I'm going next month and leaving the DSLR behind for the same reason. I have a Panasonic TZ7 and I love it. Very happy with the quality. Bought it mainly for concerts/sports stadiums as it goes out to 300mm. Haven't looked at the TZ8 so don't know what extra features it has.

Can't advise on a compact, but I think you are absolutely right to concentrate on family fun.

Check out http://www.disneyphotopass.com/aboutdpp.aspx.

Disney have a number of photographers around the parks ready and waiting to take pics. This can run into 100's of photos if you want it to. No obligation to buy any pics or pic related products, but you can pre-pay for all the pics on CD at about 20% discount to buying after the event. I was there Jan 09. I think I paid $125 and had about 120 pics. I think it was $99 prepaid.

It was great fun putting together a photobook on their website. You can upload your own pics to use along with the photopass pics and a library of stock pics. It was quite expensive but we have a wonderful momento of a memorable family holiday.

Have a great holiday.

Gary

You'll need a good zoom if EuroDisney is anything to go by! My friend went a couple of days ago and was so glad he borrowed my TZ5 as he'd never have got any decent pictures of the Disney characters if he hadn't.

Thanks for all the replies, i love the spec of the canon but think its a bit much for my needs, i was swayed towards the panasonic because of the 25-300 equivalent reach, i know quality's not going to be the same but if i was taking my slr's i'd be taking a 24-70 and a 70-200 so reach wise it seems to have even more.
I want to make my own photobook when i get back as i do for all our holidays so obviously want a compact that can cut it, but at the same time just slip into a pocket or waterproof pouch on the rides etc.
Keep them coming though i am looking into every idea posted.

How about Canon S90?
Has F2.0, pretty good to use when you are indoor and wanting to shoot some shallow DOF shots :)
DPreview just review this camera. seems alright

Take a look :)

Would you consider a bridge camera? Something like my Panasonic FZ8 would do the job nicely I think.

We are going back to Florida next year - last trip was in 2007 and there is so much new stuff now that I literally CANNOT wait. If you have any questions (assuming you havn't been before?) then let me know. I'm more of a Universal / Seaworld / Busch Gardens kinda gal but we did do a bit of Disney too.

EDIT: this place is a great resource for planning http://www.disboards.com/

First time for us so we're buzzin already and still 5 months to wait.. we've got both sets of passes so hoping to see as much as we can not just stick to Disney.
I was kinda looking for a top pocket compact but i'm open minded, i'll have a look at it.

you are going to have an amazing time - trust me!

Now I probably shouldn't advocate this as it's against the riding rules - but if you go for a compact then you might want to think about getting a waterproof camera for on-ride shots. Or even just to use in the water parks. Whatever you do don't take your non-waterproof camera on the water rides at universal. The word "soaked" barely even hints at the condition you will be in after riding those!

Something else you might find interesting / helpful - our trip report from '07:

Excuse the photography - it was before I got "into" togging properly!

Oh whatever i get i'll be getting some sort of waterproof case/pouch for it, i love white water rafting so i'm up for getting wet and definitely want pics from on the rides, i'll have a look at your link now, we've been spending alot of time on the dibb forums and getting alot of tips from there but anything that makes the time better is welcomed.

Well the one thing I would say is definately have a plan of action for when you are going to do the parks and what your "must-do" rides are etc. You won't have to be so military about it in September (unless it's school holidays?) but some kind of plan is a must.

Oh and by all means listen to other seasoned travellers for advice but make sure you plan what you think your family will like. I got gasps of horror when I said we were not bothered about Magic Kingdom / Epcot on our first trip - but I was right. We much preferred the other parks to Disney (Animal Kingdom has got nothing on Busch Gardens in my opinion - but it is just my opinion, you might love AK).

To bring this slightly back on track to your original question - I have an Olympus Mju camera with is waterproof / shockproof / bulletproof etc and I have been very happy with it. It's an older model and the zoom isn't up to much - don't know if you can get one with a longer zoom now.

Got a TZ7 you can borrow if you want mark save you spending money on a new camera,i'll get amanda t get in touch with sadie..

Anyone else notice in that photo above of the clock face they've got the Roman numeral for 4 incorrect? That's education for you these days.......

It's quite common for clocks and sundials to have IIII instead of IV, some say it's because IV was short for the roman god Jupiter, others that it just looks better on the clock face.

I went to Florida with family last year, and ended up wishing I had an slr with me

Yeah it also looks look mickey is sticking his fingers up :suspect:

we were there last Sept/Oct and everybody had a DSLR, we carried around a D5000 all day and night and no problems, didn't get in the way once.

I came back from Florida yesterday - 2 great weeks in Disney.

I took a Canon G9 and underwater housing, and a Panasonic TZ5.

I only used the G9. Wanted the Manual controls which is what I find frustrating about the TZ5.

The shots I got at discovery cove of the family underwater are fantastic and will be going on the wall.

yeah no prob Mark,al be in touch and we'll have a ride over with it if you like??
