I know this is a little below the radar for a lot of folks on here but I'm sure there's someone out there with a wealth of knowledge of compacts.

For the last few years my Canon Ixus 70 has served me well as my grab and go camera but it's getting a bit past its best.

In addition to the acceptable image quality for a small point and shoot, there are 3 things that I particularly like about it:-

It's small 85.9 x 53.5 x 19.4mm, this is really important!
It has an element of manual control
It has a proper viewfinder, admittedly a small viewfinder but useable when you're trying to take ski shots on top of a mountain in bright sunshine.

These three are the absolute must haves. So what's out there folks?
I've tried scanning the web but a lot of the time a proper v/f isn't an option when searching photo retailer web sites.

Viewfinder compacts which are very small are few and far between;

Canon A1200 - small, light and very cheap and probably a match, or better than the much older IXUS 70.

Any others are bigger and much more expensive (you didn't mention budget) so not sure how small it really has to be?
Fuji X10, Canon G12, Nikon P7100 and so on...

Thanks Ernesto, I'll check out the A1200, as for budget well whatever it takes, within reason, since the whole v/f thing is limiting my choice I feel restricting the budget is just going a tad too far.

As Chris suggested, I think you could have a look at both the G12 and X10. Of the two the Fuji is more advanced but the Canon though more straightforward gets the job done. The X10 coming through Fuji refurb store will set you back just a shade under £300 with a discount voucher and the G12 won't be much different if sourced from Kerso through our own channels here :) The X10 will need a hood which costs around £37 through Amazon. Clear glass filter is typically £15 again through Amazon.

Nick,

Nikon P7000 or 7100 seems to fulfil your requirements except for size. I have used the P7000 and its a cracking camera, it will fit into a coat pocket but definitely not a trouser pocket.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but with the P7000/7100 & G12/X10 the size is a real deal breaker. I'm sure they're great cameras but TBH if image quality was my main concern I'd take my D700. I can fit the Ixus in my jeans pocket without feeling like I've developed some sort of mechanical growth and that's just not possible with the newer choices.

Maybe I'm just asking for the moon on a stick and should stick with the Ixus.

The only camera that small with viewfinder is probably the Canon A1200. Have you looked at one as they are a good size and the shape is good too as there is a slight bulge for the hand which helps with small cameras. May not be any better than your IXUS but it will be new and finding a NOS Ixus 70 may be difficult.
