I'm looking to upgrade my current PC setup, in the house we have a Dell Vostro 400, core 2 duo 2.66 Ghz, 2GB ram, 500gb HDD, 256 Graphics, 22" LCD monitor running XP pro, Also we have a Dell insprion M501R laptop. 4gb ram, 500gb HDD, 1Gb ATI HD 550V, Windows 7

Now, I had planned to sell my Dell vostro and add about £300 to it and buy a Dell All in one machine, I sort of need an all in one as our study gets freezing during the winter and I could lift the AIO and bring it to the dining table to use..

I have seen a few on ebay for £500, but there processors don't seem any better than my nearly 4 year old Dell, Athlon 240e, 245e or Petium P6100. I had looked a second hand imacs, but they are about 4 years old for £500..

But I just came up with another option. Could I upgrade the Laptop - 8gb RAM and a 64gb SSD.. then keep all photos on an external e-sata drive (laptop has a e-sata port) and then buy a 24" LED screen (or TV) and wireless keyboard & mouse.. so I can use it whenever I need in the study, but also just use the fast laptop on the sofa when it's freezing..

Will the RAM and SSD make the laptop much quicker. I use lightroom 3 mostly,

Any advice on what to do?

Cheers

I actually just got sorted. I was outbid on a Dell one 23" last night but got a second chance offer, It was better specced with a i3 processor etc in it..
