Yes
the cannon 85mm 1.8 lens and the cannon 100mm macro lens.

can the macro lens do what the 85mm can do apart from the length

as they both seem good lenses,i would like to try macro shooting but was interested in the 85mm for portrait but will the maco do that too.

thanks

maybe the 60mm would be a good compromise on the crop body?

Macro lenses can be used the same way as any other lens, they are just designed to focus very close, the 100mm can be used as a normal short telephoto, they are not restricted to just doing close up work.

No, its all to do with the minimum focal distance. i.e. how close you can put the lens to the subject.

The 100mm f2.8 macro has a minimum focal distance of 30cm where as the 85mm f1.8 has a minimum focal distance of 85cm. The 85mm not a macro lens in the true sence, but if you attach extension tubes (kenko or canon) then they improve this.

So if you want a lens thats more versitile its the 100mm
