Connecting Laptop to TV - How ?

Hi all

I'm not very savvy when it comes to technology but thought I was on the right track.

I connected my HP Laptop with an HDMI cable to LG flat screen TV. My laptop screen started flashing slowly (pulsating) No image on TV.

I have no idea what the problem is. I went to PC World but they didn't know either.

Any ideas ?

try turning off, connecting HDMI then turning on.

Yes. I'd try laptop off, TV on and connected by hdmi then start the laptop so it can detect the TV.
 
On my Panasonic TV there are 4 HDMI inputs, I have to tell it which one the input signal is coming from, ie HDMI 4.

Also on my laptop I need to select HDMI output which tells it to use external monitor.
