Ok so on studio shoots I know often the camera is plugged into a computer or laptop where the images come up directly in software as they are taken for people sat back there o look and be lie, yay or nay or whatever thoughts they have on it.

but I was wondering, what software/hardware do you need to do that? I've never done a studio shoot or anything here i've plugged my camera in whilst shooting. I havent got the equipment to do that anyway, but when I start doing studio shoots and things which I need to learn soon and fast, I think all this knowledge is really pretty useful.

so does anyone know?

cheers.

The software that is provided with the camera.

EDIT: and a cable or wireless transmitter.

There are a few ways. Specifically a laptop, I would use the usb cable and software or just view the camera direct in windows explorer in real time as you take the pics they will show up. (EDIT I don't mean like live view)

Really? it's free when you buy a Canon! :D

When I plug my camera in using the USB cable then I can't shoot, cause it just switches to USB mode, would that not happen if I had the right software then?

Mine doesn't do that....err I don't think. Hang on...does it lol. I'm going to need to go check as I haven't done that for ages.

you can change the USB mode of your camera between PTP camera device, and just a mass storage device. In the first, windows 'sees' a camera, the second, it just sees the generic storage volume that is the contents of the flash card.

So, does that mean Id be able to plug in my camera, take a photo, then see it immediately up on my laptop?

sorry im a bit slow when it comes to some of this stuff, but then thats why im asking XD

Bibble pro is a cheaper alternative for the Mac than Nikon's software you can also download a trial.

nikon don't provide the software with the camera, iirc you need camera control pro, which is an expensive bit of software.

There are some scripts and stuff that will do it for free mind... http://www.diyphotobits.com/2008/05/23/free-tethered-shooting-script-for-nikon/

Im totally lost, I went on that website and I understand it and everything, but call me an idiot cause I had no idea what to download or how the hell it made it sound that simple. I linked my camera up and took a photo with it, but it didn't show up on the computer (thats cause I know I havent done things right) but it didn't save to the memory card either. I think im sort of stuck in limbo.

i was wondering how to do this also. If the mode is changed to PTP do the pictures still go onto the memory card or are they tranfered and saving straight onto the laptop HDD?
