hey im looking into converters i currently have a 300mm lens for my wildlife photography and this is no where near as big as i need and as i have a rather low budget (horses cost lots not much money life for photography) i was thinking of buying a converter rather then a new lens is this a smart thing to do?? and what would be best to buy? i dont know much about converters so any information would be a help?

Depends on what 300mm lens, some TC's may not even fit. for wildlife their is no alternative to long lenses, I'd look for a s/hand Sigma 170-500, or original 50-500 if on a tight budget.

Unless your current lens is an f/2.8, or at a push an f/4*, you're wasting your time and money. Even assuming that you can get a tc that will fit the chances of it producing decent images are negligible, you would need lots of light and high iso and you may also find you wouldn't have autofocus.

* by that I mean a constant f/2.8 or f/4, not your current f4-5.6

I've got a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x TC and that will retain AF on my Canon 100-400 L, even though the EXIF on the photos say f8, and the camera isn't supposed to AF past f5.6. With good light the AF speed and IQ is still very good with this TC and it's compatible with a whole range of lenses (works with all 6 of my lenses) when compared to a Canon equivalent (works with only 2). It cost £125 IIRC and it's one of the best investments I've made as it's basically doubled my lens range.
