My main computer went wrong yesterday. Graphics all broken up and corrupted.... repeated messages about the driver failing and recovering...followed by the BSOD.
It has happened before when a game has crashed and locked it up. Full power off and restart has always sorted it. not this time.
The display of the bios post screens was corrupted so windows not started. Has to be a hardware problem. PSU is a good one and way over the power needed so discounted that.
Deciding my 8800gtx was no more I ordered a new graphics card using the laptop. Waiting for delivery I thought I'd search a bit more to see if these cards failing is common and it is. I also came across some instructions for what was called 'the oven trick'.
Recipe is preheat oven to 385 to 400 F (200C roughly) and place the circuit board less heat sink and anything that can be unscrewed in the oven for 6 to 10 minutes. So nothing to lose I stripped the card down and cooked it for 7 minutes.
I put it back in the PC without the heatsink and powered up long enough to see the bios screen - no fault! So with a bit of new thermal paste and the heat sink refitted I'm back in action!
Looks like I'll have a used card to ebay when my upgrade arrives. I will say what I've done to it as I like to sell things honestly even if others on there don't.
Anyway if you've got a dead video card you haven't got round to throwing out try cooking it!
