Corrupted CF Card - can the data be recovered?

Hi would be grateful for any advice on this.
I was shooting with my Canon 5DII using a Lexar Pro 800x CF card which has been in the camera for a long while without issue. In the middle of the shoot I suddenly got an error message saying the card was unrecognised and needed to be reformated.

I tried the card in another 5D and for the same message. Other cards work fine in the original camera.

I connected the camera with the damaged card to my Mac and ran the free Lexar recovery tool but the card didn't even register as being there (maybe because it was in the camera, rather than a card reader (which I don't have)

Can anyone suggest how I might retrieve the data? I have really important work on there.

Would it be work buying a card reader to run the recovery software again
Are there data recovery places that will take the chip out of the card and recover that way?
I'm in Petersfield, Hampshire.

Thanks in advance

Buy a card reader and try. I've had to recover a few cards for customers over the years, most we've got back ok. Failing that there are specialist companies, but I dont think they are cheap.
Are the shots that important? The fact 2 cards have played up make me wonder if the camera is iffy? the other possibility is a batch of duff cards.

Plus one with Wayne..................get a card reader because if the camera is not recognising it, then unlikely that a computer will see the camera when direct connected "as usual" as 'a mass storage' device.

That is a primary reason to try it on the computer via card reader (assuming the computer will "see it" as storage 'drive') , if the Lexar recovery fails, there are other programs (though here I am talking about Windows not Mac!).

Just to clarify, you removed and stored the card once it 'errored' and surmise you did not format it in camera?

PS edited my post as re-reading it..........................I knew what I meant but it didn't 'read' very clearly ;)

The card corrupted in the camera, now says it us unrecognisable and needs formatting..which of course I haven't done
