Cross balancing sunlight and flash

I have recently been messing about with cross balancing the sun and flash.

As I currently live in Shetland the sun is always low in the sky this time of year so my subjects have very elongated shadows.

These shadows got me thinking.

Would the best place to locate my flash be somewhere along this shadow pointing back towards the subject? I have been trying to angle my subjects so the light is hitting them from about their 7 to 8 o'clock position to give me a rimlighting effect.

This puts the face in shadow and to me the most logical place to put the flash is along the axis of this shadow to lift the shadows.

Does this make sense? If so, this could be a really easy way to figure out your flash position. Of course, the flash can be moved nearer to or further away from the subject and the height adjusted as required but it would seem to be a good starting point.

It does make sense if you want a double rimlit effect like this

which was a studio shot, but the same idea.
But if you just want to produce a fill light, then it needs to be immediately above/below the lens

Okay, cool. Thanks for that.
