D300 battery grip question

Not sure if this also applies to the official MB-D10 or not, but I've got the Link Delight Meike one.

If I've got a battery in the body and a battery in the grip, should the camera/grip automatically switch batteries when one runs out?

I had a battery in the grip which ran out, then I was expecting it to switch to use the battery in the body, but the camera just turned itself off. Even if I changed d11 to D300 use camera battery first, the camera wouldn't power up until I removed the tray in the grip.

Cheers,

I had a totally fault Meike grip first time round but the replacement that they sent me has been faultless. Not had any problems with it at all. Both with the tray and with the 8xAA tray. Not tried the BL3 option as although the batteries can be picked up at a reasonable price the chargers are not that cheap.

Hi,

I have the same problem where even though in the menu system I have selected the battery order as grip first and then battery in the body, when the grip battery runs flat the camera won't power on. I have to remove the grip(which is a pain compared to the D200's grip design) and then it will use the internal body battery which sort of defeats the aim of the grip somewhat.

I think there must be a fault with them. I've put up with it and just charged them regulary.

Mike.

I cannot say for the clones, but I know it was a fundamental design decision for the MB-D10 grip to have seamless power switching on the fly. It says so on Nikon's history design page. Also on my MB-D10 I can insert and remove the battery at will and it will stay on with the top lcd changing (although I can't remember if it will cause the same response as half pressing the shutter i.e. switch off the screen).

This is how my Meike one works. The D200 grip was good because you could take out either battery but the D300/D300s/D700 one has the advantage that you can use a D3 battery and fit the grip without messing around removing battery doors etc. (I can't take the grip off my D200 because I've lost the battery door!)

The Nikon MB-D10 switches over automatically to the internal battery without an intervention from me.

Yes, Cheng was saying this too but my Meike was switches automatically so some people must have faulty ones.

Just to clarify, with the camera on, mine will switch between the batteries too. If I remove the battery from the grip, it will use the one in the camera, and when I reinsert the battery into the grip it will use that. The BP symbol on the top of the LCD shows when the battery in the grip is being used, and disappears when the battery in the body is being used.

However what it doesn't do is automatically switch to the battery in the body when the battery in the grip has run flat, which by the sound of it is what it does for everyone else?

I think my grip might be faulty, as even with custom setting d11 set to use camera battery first, the camera won't power up with a flat battery in the grip, the only way it will is if I remove it. :suspect:

I'd have guessed it might just be something the unofficial clone grip doesn't support, but interestingly Darren (cowasaki) switches automatically. Are you using official batteries or copies? Have you applied the 1.10 firmware?

Mike (Drpepper99uk), are you using an official grip or a clone?

Cheers,
