Hi All,

I recently traded up from a D60 to a D300 as I needed the faster fps and better high iso performance. I guess this is hidden away in the settings somewhere but I'm getting quite poor flesh tones from the D300. Much worse than the D60. Mine look very insipid and washed out at present.

Do any D300 owners have some magic settings for WB/Picture control that will bring the flesh tones back to life? Vivid is too far the other way !

I'm shooting jpeg fine, not raw because my main usage will be rowing events where I'm firing off up to 1000 images in a day - I could fork out for a 32gig CF card and shoot raw, but could do without too much pp to be done afterwards so would like to get it right in camera, on jpeg. The D60 could do that just fine :/ ( but with the 1600iso / 3fps limitations )

I've seen a few places that have picture controls you can grab and then upload onto the camera - any of these worth a try ?

Which picture control are you using, and what white balance setting ?

This link will allow you to add portrait etc to the D300 menu in Set picture control. This could be the answer your looking for. Also works for some other Nikon cameras. I have added it to my D300.

WB was auto, tried Standard, Neutral and Vivid. Not tried the D2XMode1, 2 or 3 yet as I was slowly dying from manflu so my patience ran out :)
 
White balance "Sunny" would be my preferred choice, with Picture Control "Neutral" anything else looks too red and saturated.

To warm that up you could try switching to 'Cloudy" white balance

Skin tones are going to look washed out, it is the winter :D

Only time I use Auto WB is indoors under artificial light
 
Use Nikon's ViewNX to create your own custome Picture Control, load that onto your camera.

Obviously it takes a bit of time to do this and test it, but thats the answer.

You can start with one of the supplied ones as your basis - mine is based on neutral and then tweaked up from there.
 
D2x mode 1 gives nice skin tones on the D2 don't know what it will be like on the D300.
