Hi all,

Right, I've just posted out my D300 to Puddleduck (please empty your PM inbox mate ) & he's received it fine but the camera won't focus with his lenses - just keeps hunting sluggishly in & out.

I've asked him to check that the switch at the side is set fully to Automatic focus & that the contacts are clean. Have also suggested resetting the camera to just make sure. Focus is set to the AE/AF button on the back of the camera.

Before I get him to send the camera back & I kick off big time at Royal Mail can anyone think of anything I may have missed that could be the cause of this?

Cheers in advance to anyone that can help,

Mike

Is he using lenses with a small maximum aperture? Focussing effectiveness deteriorates below about f4... I had that problem with my D200 and the 18-200 zoom and it has happened on my D3 with a 500f4 and a 1.7TC in combination - the max aperture it could do was f6.something and it hunted back and forth on low contrast shots (was at an airshow).

Cheers Goggz, I know he has a good mix of lenses but with either high or low apertures the camera should still focus, I don't think it is at the moment at all.

I did think it may have been the focus priority option in the menu that prevents taking a shot until focus is obtained but if the camera is not focusing at all then it can't be that?

Cheers

Puddleduck knows his stuff. It he can't make it work, there's summat wrong :(

Yep, presumed as much. I can't even begin to express what I think of Royal Mail without the swear filter turning my post into a vast amount of asterix'

Andy, could you please PM me your number when you get a min, think I have found a fix for it

Just out of interest, what have Royal Mail done? Dropped it from agreat height?

At a guess, the tiny mirror behind the main one that directs light onto the AF sensor unit may have been damaged/knocked out of alignment due to rough handling.

I saw Andy yesterday as he was just about to go back to the office to pick up the D300 - that's a real bu**er.

Andy
