D300s Auto power off

According to KenRockwell the D300s should power down after a few seconds if the camera is not being used...... Mine does not. Can't seem to find anything in the menu to switch this function on or off, so is Ken wrong or am I being an arse. Help please.
 
I think he means the meter goes off not the camera. A half press on the shutter brings it back.

my d300 does not auto turn off it just runs the battery flat, can be a big pain,

Really? I accidentally left mine on overnight and it remained on 5 blocks the next day. Granted, I didn't check the exact percentages...but I've read about people with D300Ss that were overly harsh on batteries, you might want to check that out.

As said above, leaving it for a few seconds without a button-press puts it into a semi-sleepy state which it wakes from on further input.

Mine does not appear to go into a semi sleep mode, all info still remains showing on the top LCD and if left battery will flatten over night.

I guess a call to Nikon is required.

I wouldnt have thought so, its the info in the viewfinder that turns off, not the top lcd, that will stay on while camera is on. Its perfectly normal.
 
auto meter off delay is I think the setting you need to check, its in 'c' menu on a D300, it has a 'never' setting, which will leave viewfinder metering inof on all the time. Not sure if it will be same in a D300s but should be under same menu - worth checking if you havent already.

Thanks.. Just tried that but whether I set it at 4 seconds or several mins, viewfinder stays on.
 
I'll be checking mine later, might explain why the D300 can drain a battery in hours where the D80 runs for days on the same unit.

It shouldn't. Once the meter has turned itself off, it should draw no more power than if the power switch was set to the "off" switch.

Been that way on my D100, D200 and D300s bodies.

if the top lcd does not turn of it will use more power than turning of and just displaying thre shoots left, give it a try.
 
Ok, so the extra info on the LCD makes the battery run dry in 2 months instead of 3. ;)
 
I've left mine on for a couple of weeks and still had a full battery.... it just powers itself right down, providing you haven't done something else like having a button pushed or something, it should be fine.
 
I usually leave mine on all the time - it can last for weeks and weeks without drawing much power. As mentioned above, it's only really the meter that consumes power, a few extra digits on the lcd doesn't affect battery life that I can measure..
 
What is your monitor off delay set to?

What is your menu setting D9 set to (D8 for D300)

When set to on, the illumination will be automatically on for the setting that your exposure meter is on.

This can be very draining.

mine is set to 6 seconds, and when i have left it on by mistake before a couple of times gone to use it 2 days later nothing at all,
 
Thanks for the tips everyone, I think I now know how the power down works..

Part of my issue maybe that I have two battery's, one an OEM and one not. I'm going to check but I believe the OEM might be holding it's charge for longer.
