As the title says really, i have the hs10, at the time of buying it about 8mths or so ago, i wanted to get into something more that just the family shots and odd beach photo.

After researching quite a lot and asking a few people i decided the hs10 was right, but really starting to think i made a mistake, so now im looking at getting a dslr and the D3100 seems to be in my price range to start.

But i am really struggling to see what, if anything i will gain, i assume the d3100 must be better, but comparing stats and stuff the only thing i see me losing is the zoom.

main problems i seem to get with the hs10, speed, seems to be slow between AF/pics, but mainly i seem to really struggle in anything but bright sunny days on shutter spd, and as sunny days seem to be few and far between :(

any ideas/explanations or maybe another dslr that might be better please and also anywhere it is possible to part ex the fuji ?

thanks

EDIT:

i should add, i would like to get into more sports/moving photo's, football, canoing/kayaking, maybe some kick boxing and the odd landscape/filter sunrise, sunset

Is this a silly question, or is it something else.

I would really appreciate some help please peeps.

What you will gain - Faster auto focusing, higher IQ, smaller aperture, better low light shooting, better viewfinder?, probably quicker operations all around plus choice of specific lenses.

It is more than just stats, you may be best borrowing one or somehow getting to use one for an hour or two to see if the gains are worth it to you.

I don't use a DSLR as I find them way too heavy and bulky for my use (just generally walking around taking shots of stuff!) and while I do miss the handling and operation of a DLSR the smaller camera I use is a better fit for my needs.

Thank you for the reply, you kind of hit the nail on the head, i cant get my hands on one so all i can do is go by stats.

I've got many modes as you would expect, f range is f2.8 to f11 (3.5 as soon as you zoom) with a 24-720 range, shutter speeds of 30" to 1/4000.

how many lenses would i need to compete ? i do only really use fast type stuff.

So will i gain a lot by upgrading ??
