Hi guys

Bit ignorant of the Nikon series, but a friend who is starting out is interested in a D5000. The only thing I wondered about was the fact that the auto focus is in the lens, not the body - does that mean one is stuck buying Nikon lenses or compatible ones with focus mechanisms in them, making them more expensive?

Also, does F mount mean that the lens has this mechanism, or will he have to look for F mount autofocus lenses, or whatever they are called by Nikon?

Cheers

Correct, the D5000 doesn't have an inbuilt AF drive so you will need Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM or (I think) Tamron SWM lenses if you want auto focus.

There are plenty of affordable consumer AF-S lenses available now, so the expense factor is not great. Many of them are truly excellnt lenses for the price bracket.

Great, thanks. Interesting RE the nifty - I always use mine and my friend seems to like it too, so would he have to manual focus or buy a more expensive AF-S 50mm?

Is AF-S the type required for this camera then?

Cheers, very helpful

That's the designation for Nikon lenses it's HSM for Sigma.
