D5100 multiple exposure

I'm looking to be able to take action sequances with my D5100. Nikon told me to use the multiple exposure feature. This didn't give me what I was after and the images were too faint.

I'm guessing its a PS job.
 
You dont want multi expose you want multi i.e. continuous shooting. Go to menu u will see an s for single shot then change to continuous shown by 3 rectangles.
 
Easiest to find it in the shoot menu rather than the full menu, so don't press the menu button, press the green button to the right of the eye piece, then as said above look halfway down on the right side of screen for the s, change that.
By the way you need to be in normal shoot mode and not using the screen to shoot or that screen doesn't come p the same.

That one will have been 13 separate shots then blended in photo shop. I'm guessing the photographer was using continuous shooting mode and simply held his finder down on the shutter. You can do this on your D5100 in continuous shooting mode and then blend the images afterwards. It would be worth switching to manual focus and manual exposure beforehand so that nothing changes between shots.

Not sure what the buffer is like on the D5100 in terms of how many shots you can rattle off in quick succession before the camera needs to pause for breath.

Multiple exposure can mean a couple of things. Firstly there is bracketing where the camera is set to take for example three shots of the same thing with one stop exposure difference between them. This is either used to maximise your odds of getting an exposure you're happy with or deliberately shot this way to blend the exposures into an HDR image.

I think some cameras also allow you to stack two exposures on top of each other in camera though I've never tried it.

It can stack 3 images.
It can be 3 sperate shots, each being held in memory before being merged. The results are wierd.

Excellent. N01Chris, thats exactly how it works. It must be a dark background to work.

Now seeking out the PS tutorial to give the action sequance I was after.

Um, just to help out, and as i didn't have have a clue.

Just tried it indoors, manual focus, jpeg standard.

Got to 35 and got bored, the little tell tell number on the view finder was returning to 22 as fast as the 51 took them,

So i suppose the answer is, when you run out of space ????

Just tried again through sheer boredom (big brother will do this to you :( )

Got to 135, then realized the eye-fi card was sending to my comp :bang: i'll delete the fireplace later :bonk:.

Anyway turned off, 105 before mem card died, so i guess it is infinite, depending on card.

Standard Jpeg file sizes will be helping you out here. Raws might slow things down and it also depends on your SD card write speed.

What tends to happen with raw is that you'd fire off say 20 shots at 4 frames per second and then the buffer will fill and the camera will carry on shooting but at a dramatically slower rate until you pause to let it catch up.
 
in raw i count 12 before it slows.

The 3 or 2 shot limit was in
Menu\shooting menu\ multiple exposure\number of shots
but that merges them as we discussed earlier.

Scott199, save going of on a tangent on this thread, can you PM me your thoughts on the eye-fi card. I'm thinking of getting one but they are a bit rich.
