D5100 & sb600 quick help

Just a quick one, looked around but just need to confirm something.

During a post I noticed someone said the sb600 can be used off cam, if I set it up and hit it with my pop up from my d5100. Now I know the d5100 doesn't have the commander thingy like the d7000 and so on.

Come home all exited ready for mirrors, sticky back plastic and pipe cleaners and found no settings, manual I think says it can't but not in good English

So just a yes or no, can I get my sb600 to fire off cam without any cables or rf triggers..?

Quite sure the answer is no, but need confirmation
 
No, you can't. The D3xxx and D5xxx ranges do not have the ability to be the flash commander. You can do it without cables or RF triggers by fitting an SU-800 to the camera.
 
Thought so.

In the manual it says

"Light sensor window for wirelessremote flash"

But this still needs a "other" item to work. Thought some how it might detect another flash and fire.

Yes. For no obvious reason, the light sensor on an SB600 won't allow it to work as a dumb slave. The (identical) one on an SB800 will.

Most likely so you give Nikon more money.

Typical, i should of got the sb800, trying to save a penny always comes back to bite :)

oh well triggers it is then, just needed to make sure.
